about

I never meant to be the guy who writes a bunch of songs about getting sober. I don't have a lot of control over the process of inspiration. What goes in is what come out, and recovery has become a defining part of my life.

I'm glad I wrote these songs, though, because ever since I played my first show I've always had one or two people come to me after and talk recovery. Sometimes it's elders and sometimes it's newcomers. I'm honored at the possibility to be a shining light in someone else's darkness. I never would have got this far if others hadn't done the same for me.

Almost everyone I've ever known who's working for change is broken in some way, whether from addiction or trauma, mental health issues or the million other way that the sickness of the dominant culture manifests itself in us. The problem is that we carry our damage everywhere we go, and the ways that we are broken get reflected in our movements, relationships, and in the new worlds we must build. It Doesn't Have To Be That Way. We can heal ourselves and each other. We must. It starts with talking about it, and listening. It starts with you and me. If we can rebuild whole people out of the scraps of ourselves and our friends, then perhaps we have a chance at building a world we might want to live in.
